In 1799, Beauvois first described the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake as Crotalus adamanteus. In 1896 Boulenger classified the snake as Crotalus durissus, however it was not widely accepted. The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake remains Crotalus adamanteus presently.
The latin Crotalus translates as "rattle tail" and adamanteus translates as "diamond-like pattern"
